124 / Golden Globe 2023

It was music to my ears when I heard Michelle Yeoh won Best Actress in the musical or comedy motion picture. Undoubtedly, it was no mean feat. While we are all over the moon with this country’s first Golden Globe “achievement”, one cannot help but wonder.. why do we claim so much from this success when truly Hong Kong paved her way and helped her through and through, cared for her as if she was one of their own? We were not there for her. Malaysia was not her stepping stone, Malaysia was not where her career bloomed or flourished, and in fact, had she stayed on here in the country, we would all be like.. “Michelle Yeoh who?” cos nobody would know who she is. That is how it is here in Malaysia. Talents go to waste cos we know not how to cultivate and take care of our artistes. We know nothing.

Malaysia is blessed with great talents, but as a country and a developing nation, we need to do much better than this so our homegrown talents do not have to go overseas to make a name for themselves. Sigh. Sheer joy has never looked so angry. No pun intended. Loved the movie though. Cried buckets. She deserve to bag the award, no questions asked. It has got Michelle Yeoh written all over it. Do we though, on the other hand, deserve her?
